We’re barely into September and it’s already getting darker earlier. I guess those bright, summer evenings where the sun didn’t set until about 9pm made an Irish exit. As we prepare for the clocks to fall forward and we spend more hours of the day in darkness, my fondness for my Lumie Sunrise Alarm Clock (£37) kicks back in again.
Admittedly, during the summer, the Lumie alarm clock’s gradual light was no match for the already-risen sun peaking through my blinds. But now, as the sun decides to have a lie-in and the mornings are darker, the soft awakening my Lumie gives me in the reminder of summer that keeps me going. I’m not the only fan of the wake-up lights on the PS UK team. Chloe Dunn, our senior content producer, is obsessed with her Lumie Bodyclock Spark 100 (£90), sharing that it’s a “game-changer” in her morning routine.
So what are the Lumie alarm clocks and how do they work? These alarm clocks are wake up lights, giving you a personal sunrise using a gradually brightening light to rouse you from your sleep. Then, at bedtime, you can use the fading sunset feature to create an environment for easy sleep.
Clinical trials have shown that wake-up lights can improve the quality of sleep and awakening as well as boosting your mood, energy and productivity. Read on for two editors’ review of the sunrise lamps and whether they’re as good as they claim to be.

What I Liked About the Lumie Sunrise Alarm
“As someone who struggles with sleep (and having too much of it), the Lumie Sunrise Alarm is my saviour and I wish I had found it sooner. Waking up in the dark mornings without a bad headache from an annoying alarm sound, or in a generally gloomy mood because of the lack of light, is a thing of the past. Being gently awakened by the soft, gradual light is so satisfying and makes me feel like a baby being carefully woken up from a nap.

“I received my lamp as a Christmas present last year, but at £50 I think you get a lot more for your money. The dimmable light options, the six alarm sounds, the sunrise/sunset feature, oh and there’s six different light colours to choose from in case you’re bored of warm white and fancy a bright green sunrise (very Brat). In my opinion, you can’t go wrong with this Lumie.” – Lauren Gordon, editorial coordinator.
What I Liked About the Lumie Bodyclock 100
“There’s nothing worse than the never-ending darkness the UK winter brings, which is why I absolutely love using the sunrise feature on the Lumie. I like to sleep in pitch-black darkness so waking up to the sunrise light setting has been a real game-changer during the gloomy months.

“I’ve really noticed a change in my morning mood and habits after using it. I no longer struggle to get out of bed and I use it throughout the day for an energy boost while I work from home.” – Chloe Dunn, senior content producer.
What to Consider About the Lumie Sunrise Alarm
“It doesn’t come with any music features, like a radio or bluetooth. This isn’t a biggie for me as I already have a Google Mini for my music and the sound of the radio isn’t something I want to be woken by, but if this is something you’re looking for it’s something to consider before purchasing.” – LG
What To Consider About the Lumie Bodyclock 100
“I went for one of the more basic versions of the Lumie range so my clock only has sunrise, sunset and an alarm setting. I really underestimated how much I was going to use it and probably would have opted for one with a radio built in if I’d known. Also, there’s only one (slightly annoying) alarm tone.” – CD
